Moola Nakshatra (Mula): The Root Star at the Start of Sagittarius

Moola, usually written Mula, is the nineteenth nakshatra, the first 13°20′ of sidereal Sagittarius, ruled by Ketu (the South Node); its symbol is a bundle of roots tied together, and its deity is Nirriti, the goddess of dissolution.

The name means root, and the star's markers are the stars of the Scorpion's tail, in the direction of the center of the Milky Way. Jyotish reads Moola as going to the root of things: investigation, uprooting what no longer holds, foundations, and the sharp clarity that follows a loss. Ketu's rulership turns that inward. Enter your birth details below to see whether the Moon was in Moola when you were born, and in which pada.

Degrees and padas: where Moola sits in the zodiac

Moola is the 19th of the 27 nakshatras and spans 0°00′–13°20′ Sagittarius (240°00′–253°20′ of the sidereal zodiac, counted from 0° Aries). Each nakshatra is 13°20′ wide, in four padas of 3°20′. All four padas lie in Sagittarius, so a Moola Moon is always a Sagittarius Moon (Rashi). Before it comes Jyeshtha; after it, Purva Ashadha.

The four padas of Moola
PadaDegrees in the signSign (Rashi)
10°00′–3°20′Sagittarius
23°20′–6°40′Sagittarius
36°40′–10°00′Sagittarius
410°00′–13°20′Sagittarius
Sidereal longitudes, Lahiri ayanamsa by default; the same boundaries apply to any planet, not only the Moon.

Moola opens Sagittarius, so every Moola Moon is a Jupiter-ruled Sagittarius Moon; the padas carry Aries, Taurus, Gemini and Cancer Navamsas. The star's first degrees sit at the Scorpio–Sagittarius gandanta, the water-to-fire junction classical texts treat as sensitive, which is why pada 1 births are checked to the minute.

What Moola traditionally signifies

Nirriti is the deity of dissolution and of what lies outside the ordered world, and Moola's classical significations follow her: endings that go to the root, destruction of the false, research and medicine (roots in the old herbal sense), and the ground beneath a structure. The bundle of roots is both the foundation and the thing pulled up. Ketu as lord adds detachment, intuition and the capacity to let a whole life-arrangement go. Moola is rakshasa gana with the dog as its yoni animal and is classed as sharp (tikshna), reserved in muhurta for cutting, digging and forceful acts. The gana label is a matching class, not a verdict on a person.

Moon in Moola: how the birth star is traditionally read

A Moola Moon is traditionally read as searching, direct and unafraid of endings: a person who asks the awkward question, who dismantles what does not work, who is drawn to philosophy, investigation or healing, and who may change course sharply more than once.

The texts read the harder side as rootlessness, harshness and loss when Ketu or the Moon is afflicted, and they read Jupiter, as lord of Sagittarius, as the planet that turns the uprooting into wisdom. The Moon's house and pada carry the rest.

Your first Mahadasha: Moola starts life in Ketu's period

In Vimshottari dasha the birth nakshatra decides the first major period (Mahadasha): its lord opens the sequence, and the Moon's exact degree within the star sets how much of that period was already spent at birth. For Moola the lord is Ketu, whose period lasts 7 years, so life begins inside Ketu Mahadasha with anything from days to almost 7 years of it left; Venus's 20 years follow. The Ketu Mahadasha guide covers how that period is traditionally read.

Ketu's seven years cover early childhood and are read as a quiet or inward beginning; Venus's twenty then run through school and early adulthood, so for a Moola birth the formative decades are read from Venus's house rather than from Ketu's.

How to know whether Moola is your nakshatra

Your nakshatra is the one the Moon occupied when you were born, measured on the sidereal zodiac (Lahiri ayanamsa by default). The Moon moves about 13° a day, close to one nakshatra every 24 hours, so an unknown birth time can leave two candidates, and the pada needs the time to within a couple of hours. The nakshatra calculator returns the star, lord and pada from your birth details; the Moon sign calculator shows the Rashi.

When to have the AI Jyotishi read your chart for your nakshatra

The questions that move the reading are specific: how close your Moon is to the Scorpio border, where Ketu sits and with whom, how Jupiter is placed, which house holds the Moon, and what the running period is pulling up or planting.

The AI Jyotishi reads your chart after it is calculated, takes the Moon's nakshatra together with the houses and the running dasha, and lists which parts of the chart it looked at. Software, not a human astrologer. Interpretation, not a prediction or professional advice.

FAQ

Moola nakshatra questions

Is Moola (Mula) nakshatra bad?

No birth star is bad. Moola's reputation comes from its deity Nirriti, its sharp classification in muhurta and the gandanta at its start, all of which describe moments and boundaries. For a person the texts read a well-placed Ketu and a strong Jupiter as depth and insight; the harder readings belong to afflicted charts.

What are Mula nakshatra characteristics?

Classically: inquisitive, blunt, philosophical, resilient after loss, prone to sudden changes of direction, interested in medicine or the roots of things. These are readings of the Moon's star; Jupiter, Ketu and the Moon's house decide what shows.

Who should Mula nakshatra marry?

The honest answer is that it depends on the other chart. Guna Milan sets Moola's entries (rakshasa gana, dog yoni, its nadi) against the partner's on eight counts, and the score is only the first pass; the two 7th houses, the two Venuses and the two Moons carry the rest. Kundli matching runs this with both charts.

Is it Mula or Moola?

Both spell the same Sanskrit word, mūla, root. Moola is the spelling this site's calculator uses, so that is what the result card shows; Mula is more common in English books and search. The star is the same either way.

Which Rashi is Moola nakshatra in?

Sagittarius, entirely: 0°00′–13°20′ of the sign, so every Moola Moon is a sidereal Sagittarius Moon.
