Ashwini Nakshatra: The First Birth Star, Traditionally Read

Ashwini is the first nakshatra (birth star), the opening 13°20′ of sidereal Aries, ruled by Ketu, with the horse's head as its symbol and the Ashwini Kumaras, twin physicians of the gods, as its deities.

The name is usually traced to ashva, horse, and the star is traditionally read as speed, fresh starts and a healer's instinct: quick to act, quick to recover, impatient with delay. In a Western chart these degrees fall in late tropical Aries or early Taurus, which is why a Vedic birth star rarely matches what a Western app reports. Enter your birth details below to see whether the Moon was in Ashwini when you were born, and in which pada.

Degrees and padas: where Ashwini sits in the zodiac

Ashwini is the first of the 27 nakshatras and spans 0°00′–13°20′ Aries (0°00′–13°20′ of the sidereal zodiac, counted from 0° Aries). Each nakshatra is 13°20′ wide, in four padas of 3°20′. All four padas lie in Aries, so a Ashwini Moon is always a Aries Moon (Rashi). Before it comes Revati; after it, Bharani.

The four padas of Ashwini
PadaDegrees in the signSign (Rashi)
10°00′–3°20′Aries
23°20′–6°40′Aries
36°40′–10°00′Aries
410°00′–13°20′Aries
Sidereal longitudes, Lahiri ayanamsa by default; the same boundaries apply to any planet, not only the Moon.

Because all of Ashwini sits in Aries, every Ashwini Moon is an Aries Moon; the pada changes only the Navamsa sign, from Aries in pada 1 to Cancer in pada 4. The star is also where the zodiac itself starts, so its first degree is the zero point every other longitude is counted from.

What Ashwini traditionally signifies

The Ashwini Kumaras are the horse-headed twins who heal the gods in the Vedas, and the classical significations follow them: medicine and rescue, horses and transport, youth, and the energy of a beginning before anything has gone wrong. The horse's head adds the rest: speed, a head-first way of moving, and a dislike of being reined in. Jyotish classes the star as deva gana, with the horse as its yoni animal and a swift (kshipra) temperament, which is why muhurta texts favor it for journeys, vehicles and starting treatments. Those labels sort moments and pairings; they are not a verdict on a person.

Moon in Ashwini: how the birth star is traditionally read

A Moon in Ashwini is traditionally read as a mind that moves first and explains later: fast decisions, quick sympathy, restlessness when nothing is happening, and a pull toward helping, fixing or racing ahead.

Ketu's rulership adds instinct and a habit of finishing a thing and dropping it without looking back. The same Moon reads sharper or gentler by its pada, the planets with it and the condition of Mars, the lord of Aries.

Your first Mahadasha: Ashwini starts life in Ketu's period

In Vimshottari dasha the birth nakshatra decides the first major period (Mahadasha): its lord opens the sequence, and the Moon's exact degree within the star sets how much of that period was already spent at birth. For Ashwini the lord is Ketu, whose period lasts 7 years, so life begins inside Ketu Mahadasha with anything from days to almost 7 years of it left; Venus's 20 years follow. The Ketu Mahadasha guide covers how that period is traditionally read.

Since Ketu's period is only seven years, most Ashwini-born people have finished it before second grade and spend their adolescence in Venus's twenty years; the Ketu chapter returns only at the far end of the 120-year cycle.

How to know whether Ashwini is your nakshatra

Your nakshatra is the one the Moon occupied when you were born, measured on the sidereal zodiac (Lahiri ayanamsa by default). The Moon moves about 13° a day, close to one nakshatra every 24 hours, so an unknown birth time can leave two candidates, and the pada needs the time to within a couple of hours. The nakshatra calculator returns the star, lord and pada from your birth details; the Moon sign calculator shows the Rashi.

When to have the AI Jyotishi read your chart for your nakshatra

Ask once you know Ashwini is your star and want it placed in context: the Moon's house, where Mars and Ketu sit, and what the current Mahadasha is doing.

The AI Jyotishi reads your chart after it is calculated, takes the Moon's nakshatra together with the houses and the running dasha, and lists which parts of the chart it looked at. Software, not a human astrologer. Interpretation, not a prediction or professional advice.

FAQ

Ashwini nakshatra questions

What is special about Ashwini nakshatra?

It is the first of the 27 stars, so the zodiac's zero point is its first degree, and its deities are the twin healers of the gods. Classical texts read it as beginnings, speed and healing; how much of that shows depends on the Moon's house and what else is in Aries.

What are Ashwini nakshatra characteristics?

Traditionally: quick, direct, restless, drawn to rescue and repair, better at starting than at waiting. These are readings of the Moon's star, not a test result; the Ascendant and the Moon's house change how much of it shows.

Who should Ashwini nakshatra marry?

Jyotish does not answer that with a list of stars. Guna Milan scores both partners' birth stars on eight factors, including gana (Ashwini is deva) and yoni (horse), and then the whole chart is read. Run kundli matching with both charts rather than matching names to a table.

Is Ashwini nakshatra lucky?

No birth star is lucky on its own. Ashwini is favored in muhurta for travel and treatment, which is a statement about timing. For a person, the star is read through the Moon's house, pada and company; the same Ashwini Moon reads differently in the 1st house and the 12th.

Which Rashi is Ashwini nakshatra in?

Aries, entirely: 0°00′–13°20′ of the sign, so every Ashwini Moon is a sidereal Aries Moon.
