Degrees and padas: where Ardra sits in the zodiac

Ardra is the sixth of the 27 nakshatras and spans 6°40′–20°00′ Gemini (66°40′–80°00′ of the sidereal zodiac, counted from 0° Aries). Each nakshatra is 13°20′ wide, in four padas of 3°20′. All four padas lie in Gemini, so a Ardra Moon is always a Gemini Moon (Rashi). Before it comes Mrigashira; after it, Punarvasu.

Ardra lies entirely inside Gemini, so the Moon sign is fixed; the four padas carry Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces Navamsas, and texts single out the Jupiter-ruled first pada and the Saturn-ruled middle two as reading quite differently from one another.

What Ardra traditionally signifies

Rudra is the howler, the Vedic god of storms and of healing after them, and Ardra's classical significations follow him: destruction that makes room, tears, hunting, thunder and lightning, and the power to transform through pressure. The teardrop can be read as grief or as the drop that falls when the storm breaks. Rahu adds appetite, unconventional thinking and a taste for what the mainstream avoids. Ardra is manushya gana with the dog as its yoni animal and is classed as sharp (tikshna), the group muhurta texts reserve for forceful actions and for anything meant to break a pattern, not for weddings or housewarmings.

Moon in Ardra: how the birth star is traditionally read

An Ardra Moon is traditionally read as a penetrating, restless mind with strong feelings it does not always show: analytical, blunt, drawn to research, technology and anything with a hidden mechanism, and inclined to learn through loss rather than instruction.
