Dhanishta Nakshatra: The Drum Star Between Capricorn and Aquarius

Dhanishta is the twenty-third nakshatra, from 23°20′ Capricorn to 6°40′ Aquarius, ruled by Mars; its symbol is a drum (the mridanga) or a flute, and its deities are the eight Vasus, gods of the elements and of wealth.

The name is read as the wealthiest or the most generous, from dhana, wealth, and its markers are the small diamond of stars in the Dolphin. Jyotish reads Dhanishta as rhythm and abundance: music, timing, fame, and prosperity that is shared. Two padas sit in Capricorn and two in Aquarius, both Saturn's signs, so the pada changes the Rashi but not its lord. Enter your birth details below to find yours.

Degrees and padas: where Dhanishta sits in the zodiac

Dhanishta is the 23rd of the 27 nakshatras and spans 23°20′ Capricorn – 6°40′ Aquarius (293°20′–306°40′ of the sidereal zodiac, counted from 0° Aries). Each nakshatra is 13°20′ wide, in four padas of 3°20′. padas 1–2 fall in Capricorn and padas 3–4 in Aquarius, so two Dhanishta births can have different Moon signs (Rashi). Before it comes Shravana; after it, Shatabhisha.

226°40′–30°00′Capricorn
30°00′–3°20′Aquarius
43°20′–6°40′Aquarius
Sidereal longitudes, Lahiri ayanamsa by default; the same boundaries apply to any planet, not only the Moon.

Padas 1 and 2 are in Capricorn with Leo and Virgo Navamsas; padas 3 and 4 are in Aquarius with Libra and Scorpio Navamsas. Both signs belong to Saturn, so a Dhanishta Moon answers to Saturn either way; the Capricorn half is traditionally read as more practical and the Aquarius half as more social and inventive.

What Dhanishta traditionally signifies

The eight Vasus are the deities of earth, fire, wind, water, sky, sun, moon and stars, and Dhanishta's classical significations follow their abundance: wealth, property, generosity, music, rhythm and timing, and a reputation that spreads. The drum is sound carried by a hollow space, which the texts read as fame and also as emptiness beneath the beat. Mars as lord adds energy and ambition; Saturn's signs add the discipline to keep time. Dhanishta is rakshasa gana, lion yoni, classed as movable (chara) and used in muhurta for travel and music. The gana label is a matching class, not a verdict.

Moon in Dhanishta: how the birth star is traditionally read

A Dhanishta Moon is traditionally read as energetic, musical and ambitious for recognition: a good sense of timing, generosity when they have, a pull toward groups and performances, and the knack of turning skill into money.

The texts read the harder side as restlessness, a hollow feeling behind the success, and quarrels over possessions when Mars or the Moon is afflicted. Saturn's condition, Mars's placement and the Moon's house decide whether the drum carries or merely sounds.

Your first Mahadasha: Dhanishta starts life in Mars's period

In Vimshottari dasha the birth nakshatra decides the first major period (Mahadasha): its lord opens the sequence, and the Moon's exact degree within the star sets how much of that period was already spent at birth. For Dhanishta the lord is Mars, whose period lasts 7 years, so life begins inside Mars Mahadasha with anything from days to almost 7 years of it left; Rahu's 18 years follow. The Mars Mahadasha guide covers how that period is traditionally read.

Mars's seven years run through early childhood and are read as a lively, physical start; Rahu's eighteen then take a Dhanishta birth through school and into the twenties, and the star's wish for recognition is usually read as finding its arena in whatever house Rahu occupies.

How to know whether Dhanishta is your nakshatra

Your nakshatra is the one the Moon occupied when you were born, measured on the sidereal zodiac (Lahiri ayanamsa by default). The Moon moves about 13° a day, close to one nakshatra every 24 hours, so an unknown birth time can leave two candidates, and the pada needs the time to within a couple of hours. The nakshatra calculator returns the star, lord and pada from your birth details; the Moon sign calculator shows the Rashi, which for Dhanishta depends on the pada.

When to have the AI Jyotishi read your chart for your nakshatra

The specifics change the reading: whether your Moon is in the Capricorn or the Aquarius padas, how Saturn is placed as lord of both, where Mars sits, whether the opening Mars and Rahu periods are behind you, and which house holds the Moon.

The AI Jyotishi reads your chart after it is calculated, takes the Moon's nakshatra together with the houses and the running dasha, and lists which parts of the chart it looked at. Software, not a human astrologer. Interpretation, not a prediction or professional advice.

FAQ

Dhanishta nakshatra questions

What does Dhanishta nakshatra mean?

The wealthiest, or the most bountiful: a star of abundance, music and fame ruled by the eight Vasus, with the drum as its symbol and Mars as its lord. In a chart the promise is read through Saturn, Mars and the Moon's house rather than the name.

What are Dhanishta nakshatra characteristics?

Classically: rhythmic, generous, ambitious, sociable, fond of music and property, quick to quarrel over what they own. These are readings of the Moon's star; the pada's sign, Mars and the Ascendant change what shows.

Who should Dhanishta nakshatra marry?

Compatibility for a Dhanishta Moon is worked out against a specific partner: the eight Guna Milan counts (Dhanishta's gana is rakshasa, its yoni the lion) give a score, and the two charts then supply the real answer through their 7th houses, their Venuses and the two Moons. Kundli matching takes both charts and does exactly that.

Is Dhanishta nakshatra good for wealth?

Its name promises it, but Jyotish reads wealth from the 2nd and 11th houses and their lords, not from the birth star alone. A Dhanishta Moon with a strong Saturn and Mars is read as money through skill and timing; the houses say how much and from where.

Which Rashi is Dhanishta nakshatra in?

Capricorn for padas 1–2 (23°20′–30°00′) and Aquarius for padas 3–4 (0°00′–6°40′). The Moon's exact degree decides, so the birth time matters more for Dhanishta than for a star that stays inside one sign.
