Degrees and padas: where Chitra sits in the zodiac
Chitra is the 14th of the 27 nakshatras and spans 23°20′ Virgo – 6°40′ Libra (173°20′–186°40′ of the sidereal zodiac, counted from 0° Aries). Each nakshatra is 13°20′ wide, in four padas of 3°20′. padas 1–2 fall in Virgo and padas 3–4 in Libra, so two Chitra births can have different Moon signs (Rashi). Before it comes Hasta; after it, Swati.
| Pada | Degrees in the sign | Sign (Rashi) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 23°20′–26°40′ | Virgo |
| 2 | 26°40′–30°00′ | Virgo |
| 3 | 0°00′–3°20′ | Libra |
| 4 | 3°20′–6°40′ | Libra |
Padas 1 and 2 are in Virgo with Leo and Virgo Navamsas, the second of them vargottama; padas 3 and 4 are in Libra with Libra and Scorpio Navamsas, the third also vargottama. The Virgo half is traditionally read as the craftsman at the bench; the Libra half as the designer presenting the work. A birth time to the hour usually settles the pada.
What Chitra traditionally signifies
Tvashtar shapes the weapons, chariots and bodies of the gods, and Chitra's classical significations are a maker's: architecture, engineering, jewelry, art, costume, and the pride that comes with a finished object. The jewel adds brightness, glamour and the wish to be admired for one's work. Mars supplies energy, competitiveness and a temper when the work is criticized. Chitra is rakshasa gana with the tiger as its yoni animal and is classed as soft (mridu), chosen in muhurta for art, music, clothing and friendship. The gana label is a temperament class used in matching, not a judgment of the person.
Moon in Chitra: how the birth star is traditionally read
A Chitra Moon is traditionally read as striking, creative and self-possessed: a person with a strong aesthetic sense, visible talent, an eye for structure, and a need to make something that lasts.
The texts read the harder side as vanity, impatience and sharpness with collaborators when Mars or the Moon is afflicted. The pada's sign, Mars's condition and the Moon's house set how much of the maker and how much of the showman appears.
Your first Mahadasha: Chitra starts life in Mars's period
In Vimshottari dasha the birth nakshatra decides the first major period (Mahadasha): its lord opens the sequence, and the Moon's exact degree within the star sets how much of that period was already spent at birth. For Chitra the lord is Mars, whose period lasts 7 years, so life begins inside Mars Mahadasha with anything from days to almost 7 years of it left; Rahu's 18 years follow. The Mars Mahadasha guide covers how that period is traditionally read.
Mars's seven years run through early childhood and are read as a physically active start; Rahu's eighteen then cover school and early adulthood, so for a Chitra birth the formative years are read from Rahu's house, with the star's ambition usually finding its field there.
How to know whether Chitra is your nakshatra
Your nakshatra is the one the Moon occupied when you were born, measured on the sidereal zodiac (Lahiri ayanamsa by default). The Moon moves about 13° a day, close to one nakshatra every 24 hours, so an unknown birth time can leave two candidates, and the pada needs the time to within a couple of hours. The nakshatra calculator returns the star, lord and pada from your birth details; the Moon sign calculator shows the Rashi, which for Chitra depends on the pada.
When to have the AI Jyotishi read your chart for your nakshatra
Ask when you want to know whether your Moon is in Chitra's Virgo or Libra padas, where Mars sits, and what the current period is building.
The AI Jyotishi reads your chart after it is calculated, takes the Moon's nakshatra together with the houses and the running dasha, and lists which parts of the chart it looked at. Software, not a human astrologer. Interpretation, not a prediction or professional advice.
FAQ
Chitra nakshatra questions
What are Chitra nakshatra characteristics?
Classically: artistic, ambitious, elegant, independent, sharp-eyed, sensitive to criticism, drawn to building and design. These are readings of the Moon's star; Mars, the pada's sign and the Moon's house change them.
Who should Chitra nakshatra marry?
Compatibility is scored, not looked up. In Guna Milan the two birth stars are compared on eight counts, and Chitra's own entries (rakshasa gana, tiger yoni) only mean something against the partner's; after the score, both charts are read, especially the 7th houses and Venus. Kundli matching does this with both charts.
Is Chitra nakshatra good or bad?
Neither on its own. Muhurta texts call it soft and use it for creative beginnings, which is about timing. For a person, a well-placed Mars and Moon are read as talent that gets built; an afflicted pair as ambition that frays.
Is Chitra the star Spica?
Yes. Spica is Chitra's marker, and the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa is defined so that Spica sits at 0° Libra, the boundary between Chitra's Virgo and Libra padas. The star's name, the brilliant one, describes the sky as much as the symbol.
Which Rashi is Chitra nakshatra in?
Virgo for padas 1–2 (23°20′–30°00′) and Libra for padas 3–4 (0°00′–6°40′). The Moon's exact degree decides, so the birth time matters more for Chitra than for a star that stays inside one sign.
