Ashlesha Nakshatra: The Serpent Star at the End of Cancer

Ashlesha (also spelled Aslesha) is the ninth nakshatra, the last 13°20′ of sidereal Cancer, ruled by Mercury; its symbol is a coiled serpent and its deities are the Nagas, the serpent beings.

The name means the embrace, or the entwining, and the classical reading is the serpent's: coiling, holding, hidden strength, poison and its antidote, and a watchful intelligence that sees before it acts. Mercury as lord makes it a star of the mind in the Moon's own sign. Enter your birth details below to see whether the Moon was in Ashlesha at your birth, and in which pada.

Degrees and padas: where Ashlesha sits in the zodiac

Ashlesha is the ninth of the 27 nakshatras and spans 16°40′–30°00′ Cancer (106°40′–120°00′ of the sidereal zodiac, counted from 0° Aries). Each nakshatra is 13°20′ wide, in four padas of 3°20′. All four padas lie in Cancer, so a Ashlesha Moon is always a Cancer Moon (Rashi). Before it comes Pushya; after it, Magha.

The four padas of Ashlesha
PadaDegrees in the signSign (Rashi)
116°40′–20°00′Cancer
220°00′–23°20′Cancer
323°20′–26°40′Cancer
426°40′–30°00′Cancer
Sidereal longitudes, Lahiri ayanamsa by default; the same boundaries apply to any planet, not only the Moon.

Ashlesha closes Cancer, so every Ashlesha Moon is a Cancer Moon; the Navamsas run Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces. Its last degrees border Magha and Leo, one of the three water-to-fire junctions (gandanta) that classical texts treat as sensitive, which is one reason the exact degree is worth knowing.

What Ashlesha traditionally signifies

The Nagas guard treasure and underground water in Indian myth, and Ashlesha's classical significations come from them: secrecy, wisdom kept close, poisons and medicines, hypnotic persuasion, and the ability to shed a skin. The coiled serpent is also the image of kundalini, so the star is tied to concentrated inner energy. Mercury adds analysis, speech and strategy. Ashlesha is rakshasa gana with the cat as its yoni animal and is classed as sharp (tikshna); muhurta texts use it for decisive or confrontational acts and keep it away from gentle beginnings. Those are classifications of moments and pairings, not verdicts on people.

Moon in Ashlesha: how the birth star is traditionally read

An Ashlesha Moon is traditionally read as perceptive, private and strategic: a person who reads a room before speaking, holds feelings tightly, remembers slights, and can be either a healer or a manipulator with the same skill set.

The texts read the better side as insight and loyalty and the harder side as suspicion and control, with Mercury's condition, the Moon's house and the planets beside the Moon deciding which prevails.

Your first Mahadasha: Ashlesha starts life in Mercury's period

In Vimshottari dasha the birth nakshatra decides the first major period (Mahadasha): its lord opens the sequence, and the Moon's exact degree within the star sets how much of that period was already spent at birth. For Ashlesha the lord is Mercury, whose period lasts 17 years, so life begins inside Mercury Mahadasha with anything from days to almost 17 years of it left; Ketu's 7 years follow. The Mercury Mahadasha guide covers how that period is traditionally read.

Seventeen years of Mercury at the start is read as a verbal, school-shaped childhood; Ketu's seven years follow in the late teens, and the drop from Mercury's busy curiosity into Ketu's detachment is often the first turn an Ashlesha-born person notices in their own timeline.

How to know whether Ashlesha is your nakshatra

Your nakshatra is the one the Moon occupied when you were born, measured on the sidereal zodiac (Lahiri ayanamsa by default). The Moon moves about 13° a day, close to one nakshatra every 24 hours, so an unknown birth time can leave two candidates, and the pada needs the time to within a couple of hours. The nakshatra calculator returns the star, lord and pada from your birth details; the Moon sign calculator shows the Rashi.

When to have the AI Jyotishi read your chart for your nakshatra

The questions worth bringing are specific ones: how close your Moon sits to the Leo border, whether Mercury is strong enough to turn the serpent's watchfulness into skill, which house the Moon occupies, and what the running period is doing with it.

The AI Jyotishi reads your chart after it is calculated, takes the Moon's nakshatra together with the houses and the running dasha, and lists which parts of the chart it looked at. Software, not a human astrologer. Interpretation, not a prediction or professional advice.

FAQ

Ashlesha nakshatra questions

Is Ashlesha nakshatra bad?

No birth star is bad. Ashlesha has a hard reputation because muhurta texts class it as sharp and because its deities are serpents, but those are timing classes and symbols. For a person the texts read a strong Mercury and a well-placed Moon as insight and skill; only an afflicted Moon is read as the serpent's harder traits.

What are Ashlesha nakshatra characteristics?

Classically: observant, secretive, persuasive, intuitive, loyal to a few, slow to forgive, drawn to medicine, psychology and strategy. These are readings of the Moon's star; the Ascendant and Mercury change what shows.

Who should Ashlesha nakshatra marry?

Not a question a single star answers. Guna Milan scores both birth stars on eight factors, Ashlesha contributing rakshasa gana and cat yoni, and then both charts are read in full, including each 7th house and Venus. Run kundli matching with the two charts rather than a table.

What is the gandanta near Ashlesha?

The junction between Cancer and Leo, where a water sign ends and a fire sign begins; the last degrees of Ashlesha and the first of Magha straddle it. Classical texts read a Moon very close to the boundary as sensitive and ask for extra care with the birth time.

Which Rashi is Ashlesha nakshatra in?

Cancer, entirely: 16°40′–30°00′ of the sign, so every Ashlesha Moon is a sidereal Cancer Moon.
