Ketu Mahadasha Meaning: The 7-Year South Node Period, Traditionally Read

Ketu Mahadasha is the 7-year major period (Mahadasha) ruled by the South Node (Ketu) in Vimshottari dasha. It is traditionally read as a chapter of detachment, insight and letting go, where what no longer fits falls away and what remains is looked at more closely.

Ketu is the point opposite Rahu on the Moon's path, the southern eclipse point, and Jyotish describes it as a body without a head: instinct, memory and depth without appetite. Its period tends to loosen the grip of the material themes Rahu tightens. How gently or sharply that happens depends on Ketu in your own chart: its house, the lord of its sign, and the planets with it. What Ketu Mahadasha traditionally signifies

Ketu's classical significations are liberation (moksha), spiritual inquiry, research and concentration, the past and what was carried forward from it, sudden separations, and a kind of knowledge that arrives whole rather than step by step. Ketu Mahadasha is traditionally read as the years when attachment thins: to a role, a place, a relationship or an idea of yourself.

That thinning is the whole reading, and it cuts both ways. Where Ketu is well placed, the period is described as clarity, focus and release from what was already finished; where it is afflicted, as drift, isolation and endings that feel abrupt. For the many people born under Ashwini, Magha or Mula, Ketu's period is the first one of life and is over by age 7, so the question usually arrives in adulthood, when it returns 113 years after its first start.

Where Ketu's 7 years sit in the 120-year cycle

Vimshottari dasha gives the nine period lords fixed lengths that add up to 120 years. The order never changes; only your starting point does, set by the Moon's birth star (nakshatra).

The nine Vimshottari major periods, in order
Period (Mahadasha)Years
Ketu (this guide)7
Venus20
Sun6
Moon10
Mars7
Rahu18
Jupiter16
Saturn19
Mercury17
The sequence repeats after Mercury.

Ketu opens the sequence, after Mercury's 17 years and before Venus's 20. The handover at its end is traditionally read as the sharpest contrast in the whole cycle: seven years of simplification followed by two decades of Venus's comforts, partnerships and pleasures. The Mercury Mahadasha guide covers the period before Ketu; the Venus Mahadasha guide covers the one after.

Is Ketu Mahadasha good or bad?

Ketu, like Rahu, rules no sign in the Parashari system, so it is never read on its own. Classical rules give its period the results of the house it occupies, the lord of that sign, and any planet it is joined with or aspected by, and they read all of it against your rising sign. A Ketu that sits with a strong trine lord, or in the 3rd, 9th or 12th house, is traditionally read as a period of focus and quiet progress; a Ketu that sits with a weak Moon or in the 7th is read as harder on relationships and mood.

The period is short, which changes how it is judged: seven years is long enough to end something and begin something, not long enough to build a career on. Practitioners therefore read it less as good or bad and more as what gets cleared.

Ketu Mahadasha for career, marriage and money

  • Career: read through Ketu's connection to the 10th house and its lord. Ketu rules nothing, so it works through company: Ketu with the 10th lord is traditionally read as a shift toward specialized, technical, research or healing work, and away from visibility for its own sake.
  • Marriage and relationships: read from the 7th house, its lord and Venus. Ketu's period is traditionally read as reducing the appetite for partnership rather than removing partners; Ketu in the 7th or with Venus makes separation or deliberate solitude the central theme, while a strong 7th lord keeps the relationship and changes only its register.
  • Money: read from the 2nd and 11th. Ketu is not a wealth lord; its period is traditionally read as caring less about accumulation, with gains arriving through the planet it is joined with. Ketu with the 2nd or 11th lord is read as money from unusual or specialized sources.

Antardasha: how the 7 years break into nine sub-periods

Seven years give nine short sub-periods (Antardasha), the first of them Ketu's own, under six months. Classical practice reads each through its lord's standing in your chart and its relationship to Ketu. Ketu–Venus, the longest at over a year, is traditionally read as the stretch where comfort and relationships return early; Ketu–Saturn and Ketu–Rahu as the two where the period's detachment is felt most; Ketu–Jupiter as the stretch of teachers, counsel and meaning.

How to know whether you are in Ketu Mahadasha right now

Your first period starts at birth, already partly used up: the Moon's exact degree within its nakshatra sets how much was left, and every later period follows in the fixed order. So whether Ketu Mahadasha is running for you depends on your birth Moon and your age. Birth time matters: an hour of error can move the dates by months, an unknown time by years. The dasha calculator lists your full sequence with dates; the alternative dasha calculator runs Yogini, Ashtottari, Kalachakra and Chara dasha for comparison.

When to have the AI Jyotishi read your chart for this period

Ask when you want to know what Ketu is actually attached to in your chart: which house it occupies, which planet it answers to, whether that planet is strong, which sub-period is running, and how the Venus period after it is shaping up. The AI Jyotishi reads your chart after it is calculated, checks the running dasha and transits together for timing questions, and lists which parts of the chart it looked at. FAQ

Ketu Mahadasha questions

Is Ketu Mahadasha good or bad?

Neither on its own. Ketu rules no sign, so classical texts read its period through the house it sits in, the lord of that sign and the planets with it. Ketu with a strong planet, or in the 3rd, 9th or 12th house, is traditionally read as a focused and freeing seven years; Ketu with a weak Moon or in the 7th is read as harder on mood and relationships.

What happens in Ketu Mahadasha?

Traditionally, attachment loosens in the area of life Ketu occupies: a job, a place or a relationship that was already finished tends to end, interest turns inward or toward specialized work, and the texts describe insight arriving suddenly rather than through effort. The tone depends on Ketu's company in your chart, from calm clarity to abrupt separation.

How long is Ketu Mahadasha?

Seven years, tied with Mars for the second shortest in the cycle; only the Sun's six are shorter. People born under Ashwini, Magha or Mula start life in it and finish before age 7; everyone else meets it in adulthood, right after Mercury's 17 years and right before Venus's 20.

Is Ketu Mahadasha good for marriage?

Marriage is read from the 7th house, its lord and Venus, not from Ketu alone. Ketu's period is traditionally read as lowering the appetite for partnership, so marriages during it are read as needing a strong 7th lord or an active Venus sub-period to anchor them. The Ketu–Venus sub-period is the one most often named for relationships.

What is the difference between Rahu and Ketu Mahadasha?

Rahu's 18 years are read as appetite and expansion, Ketu's 7 as detachment and depth; they are the two ends of the same axis in your chart, always opposite each other. Both are read through the planets they are joined with.
