What Sun Mahadasha traditionally signifies
The Sun's significations are the soul and the sense of self, the father, kings, governments and institutions, authority and rank, health and vitality, and honor. Classical texts call it a mild malefic: hot, dry and commanding, good for the house it rules and hard on whatever sits too close to it. Sun Mahadasha is traditionally read as the years when authority, your own or someone else's, sets the agenda.
- A strong Sun, in Aries or Leo or in an angle or trine: the period is read as promotion, recognition from institutions, improved health, and a clearer sense of purpose.
- A weak Sun, in Libra or the 6th, 8th or 12th: the same six years are read as conflict with authority, strain on the father or on health, and effort that goes unseen.
- The Sun with Saturn, Rahu or Ketu: read as a period where ego and duty argue.
Where Sun's 6 years sit in the 120-year cycle
Vimshottari dasha gives the nine period lords fixed lengths that add up to 120 years. The order never changes; only your starting point does, set by the Moon's birth star (nakshatra).
| Period (Mahadasha) | Years |
|---|---|
| Ketu | 7 |
| Venus | 20 |
| Sun (this guide) | 6 |
| Moon | 10 |
| Mars | 7 |
| Rahu | 18 |
| Jupiter | 16 |
| Saturn | 19 |
| Mercury | 17 |
The Sun is third in the sequence, after Venus's 20 years and before the Moon's 10. For most adults the Sun period arrives at the end of two decades of Venus, and the tradition reads that handover as a change of register: from comfort, partnership and pleasure to purpose, position and the self, in six concentrated years. The Venus Mahadasha guide covers the long period before; the Moon Mahadasha guide the one after.
Is Sun Mahadasha good or bad?
The Sun rules one sign only, Leo, so its period is read mainly from two houses: the one it stands in and the one it rules for your rising sign (Lagna), weighed by its sign strength, degree and the planets with it. One rulership makes the reading clear-cut: for Leo rising the Sun is the rising-sign lord, for Aries it rules the 5th and for Sagittarius the 9th, all read as favorable; for Scorpio it rules the 10th, read as a career period; for Capricorn it rules the 8th and for Virgo the 12th, read as quieter and less public.
Dignity settles the rest. The Sun exalted in Aries or at home in Leo is traditionally read as giving the period's full reputation for rank and recognition; the Sun debilitated in Libra is read as a period where authority is contested or borrowed.
Sun Mahadasha for career, marriage and money
- Career: this is the Sun's natural field, read through the 10th house and its lord. The Sun ruling, occupying or aspecting the 10th is traditionally read as promotion, government or institutional work and public recognition; the Sun far from the 10th is read as raising confidence more than rank.
- Marriage and relationships: read from the 7th house, its lord and Venus. The Sun's period is traditionally read as a time when pride and autonomy test partnerships; the Sun in the 7th, or ruling it for Aquarius rising, makes the balance between self and partner the central theme of the six years.
- Money: read from the 2nd and 11th. The Sun is a significator of status more than wealth, so the period is traditionally read as income through position, government, employers or the father where the Sun ties to those houses.
Antardasha: how the 6 years break into nine sub-periods
Six years hold nine brief sub-periods (Antardasha), opening with the Sun's own, under four months. Each is read through its lord's standing in your chart and its relationship to the Sun. Sun–Venus, the longest at a year, is ruled by a natural enemy of the Sun and is traditionally read as the stretch where comfort and authority negotiate; Sun–Moon, Sun–Mars and Sun–Jupiter, ruled by the Sun's natural friends, as the supportive stretches; Sun–Saturn, close to a year and the other enemy's stretch, as the one where duty weighs on the self.
| Sub-period (Antardasha) | Length |
|---|---|
| Sun–Sun | 3.6 mo |
| Sun–Moon | 6.0 mo |
| Sun–Mars | 4.2 mo |
| Sun–Rahu | 10.8 mo |
| Sun–Jupiter | 9.6 mo |
| Sun–Saturn | 11.4 mo |
| Sun–Mercury | 10.2 mo |
| Sun–Ketu | 4.2 mo |
| Sun–Venus | 1 yr 0 mo |
How to know whether you are in Sun Mahadasha right now
Your first period starts at birth, already partly used up: the Moon's exact degree within its nakshatra sets how much was left, and every later period follows in the fixed order. So whether Sun Mahadasha is running for you depends on your birth Moon and your age. Birth time matters: an hour of error can move the dates by months, an unknown time by years. The dasha calculator lists your full sequence with dates; the alternative dasha calculator runs Yogini, Ashtottari, Kalachakra and Chara dasha for comparison.
When to have the AI Jyotishi read your chart for this period
Ask when you want the Sun read for your chart rather than for Leo in general: which house it rules for you, its dignity and degree, what sits with it, which sub-period is running, and whether the Sun's transit or an eclipse is crossing the same houses. The AI Jyotishi reads your chart after it is calculated, checks the running dasha and transits together for timing questions, and lists which parts of the chart it looked at. Software, not a human astrologer. Interpretation, not a prediction or professional advice.
FAQ
Sun Mahadasha questions
Is Sun Mahadasha good or bad?
It depends on the Sun's dignity and on the house it rules for your rising sign. A Sun in Aries or Leo, or ruling a trine as it does for Aries, Leo and Sagittarius rising, is traditionally read as six years of recognition and purpose; a Sun in Libra, or ruling the 8th or 12th, is read as a period where authority is harder to hold.
What happens in Surya Mahadasha?
Traditionally, matters of authority come to the front: promotion or conflict at work, dealings with government and institutions, the father's situation, your own health and vitality, and a sharper sense of what you stand for. The texts describe it as a visible, commanding period rather than a comfortable one.
Is Sun Mahadasha good for career?
It is traditionally read as one of the clearest career periods, because the Sun signifies rank and the state. Whether it moves your position depends on the Sun's link to the 10th house and its lord in your chart; the Sun ruling the 10th, as for Scorpio rising, is where the tradition expects promotion.
Why is Sun Mahadasha so short?
The Vimshottari shares are fixed by the system itself: the Sun gets 6 of the 120 years, Venus 20. Because the period is brief, its nine sub-periods each last only months, and a reading usually turns on which two or three of them fall in the years that matter to you.
What comes after Sun Mahadasha?
The Moon's 10 years, always. The order is fixed: Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu. The Sun-to-Moon handover is traditionally read as a softening, from authority and the self to feeling, home and the public.
