What a Saturn return is, and why the date doesn't change in Vedic astrology
Saturn takes about 29.5 years to go once around the zodiac. When it reaches the place it occupied at your birth, Western astrology calls that a Saturn return and reads it as a threshold: the first around age 29, the second near 58, the third near 88. Because Saturn slows, stops and reverses for several months each year, the return often happens as three passes over up to a year.
Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, about 24° behind the tropical one. That shifts your natal Saturn and transiting Saturn by exactly the same amount, so the conjunction, and therefore the date, is identical in both systems. Only the sign label changes. Through 2026, Saturn sits in tropical Aries on a Western chart and in sidereal Pisces on a Vedic one; it is the same planet in the same place. The sidereal vs tropical guide explains the offset.
How Vedic astrology reads Saturn's transit instead: Sade Sati
Jyotish rarely measures Saturn against your natal Saturn. It measures Saturn against your Moon sign (Rashi), because the Moon stands for the mind and daily life. Saturn's 7½-year passage (Sade Sati) is the stretch when transiting Saturn moves through the sign before your Moon sign, your Moon sign itself, and the sign after it: three signs, about 2½ years each.
- Rising phase: Saturn in the 12th sign from your Moon. Traditionally read as the period when commitments and expenses accumulate quietly.
- Peak phase: Saturn over your Moon sign. Traditionally read as the most demanding stretch, where responsibility is felt most directly.
- Setting phase: Saturn in the 2nd sign from your Moon. Traditionally read as consolidation, with the pressure easing toward the end.
Two shorter transits are read alongside it: Saturn in the 4th sign from the Moon (Kantaka Shani) and in the 8th (Ashtama Shani). The Sade Sati calculator shows all of these for your chart with start and end dates, and the card under the headline on this page is that same calculation.
Where Saturn is right now, and who is in Sade Sati in 2026
Saturn entered sidereal Pisces (Lahiri ayanamsa) on Mar 29, 2025 and stays there until Jun 2, 2027, then slips back into Pisces from Oct 20, 2027 to Feb 23, 2028 during its retrograde loop before settling into Aries. Dates are UTC; a crossing near midnight can fall a day earlier or later in your time zone. While Saturn is in Pisces, Sade Sati is running for people whose Vedic Moon sign is Aquarius (setting phase), Pisces (peak) or Aries (rising).
One caution for readers from Western astrology: those are sidereal Moon signs. Your tropical Moon sign is usually one sign later, so a tropical Taurus Moon is often a sidereal Aries Moon and in the rising phase right now. Use the calculator rather than converting in your head.
Saturn return vs Sade Sati: when they overlap, and when they don't
Both recur every 29.5 years, but they are measured from different points. A Saturn return is measured from your natal Saturn; Sade Sati from your natal Moon. They coincide only when natal Saturn sits in the sign before your Moon, in your Moon sign, or in the sign after it. For everyone else, the two can be years apart: Saturn spends about 2½ years in a sign, so each sign between the end of Sade Sati and your natal Saturn adds about 2½ years.
Vedic astrology adds a third clock that Western astrology lacks: planetary periods (Vimshottari dasha). A Saturn major period (Mahadasha) runs 19 years and arrives on its own schedule, set by your Moon's birth star. Traditionally, a Saturn transit is read against the period running at the time; the same Sade Sati is read differently during a Jupiter period than during a Saturn one. The dasha calculator shows which period you are in and when it ends.
How to find your Vedic Saturn return date
Start with your natal Saturn: the Vedic birth chart calculator lists its sidereal sign and degree. Then open the transit calculator: it shows Saturn's current sign and degree and a sign-by-sign timeline with the dates Saturn enters and leaves each sign. Your return begins when transiting Saturn reaches your natal Saturn's sign and passes its degree; with the retrograde loop, that is often three passes within about a year.
Born with Saturn in sidereal Pisces, between Feb 16, 1996 and Apr 17, 1998 (or during Saturn's short visit from Jun 2 to Aug 9, 1995), your first return is happening during the current Pisces transit. Born between Apr 9, 1966 and Mar 7, 1969 with Saturn in Pisces, this is your second. Those windows come from the same ephemeris that casts your chart; the calculator confirms them for your exact birth time.
What the Vedic reading of Saturn traditionally emphasizes
In Jyotish, Saturn (Shani) is the planet of time, limits, labor and consequence. A Saturn transit over the Moon is traditionally read as a stretch where effort is required and shortcuts stop working: responsibilities that were deferred come due, and what was built honestly tends to hold. It is read as demanding, not as a punishment, and classical texts describe it as a period that rewards patience and structure.
How it plays out depends on the whole chart: natal Saturn's strength and house, the Moon's condition, the period running, and Jupiter's transit at the same time. That is why a one-line verdict on Sade Sati is never enough. When you want yours read in context, ask the AI Jyotishi: it reads your chart after it is calculated, checks the running dasha and transits together for timing questions, and lists which parts of the chart it looked at. FAQ
Saturn return and Sade Sati questions
At what age is your Saturn return?
The first around age 29 to 30, the second around 58 to 59, the third around 87 to 88, in Vedic and Western astrology alike. Saturn's 29.5-year orbit sets the rhythm; the retrograde loop means each return usually unfolds over several months to a year.
Is 2026 a Saturn return year?
For people born with Saturn in sidereal Pisces, yes: mainly Feb 1996 to Apr 1998, plus mid-1995, for a first return, and Apr 1966 to Mar 1969 for a second. Saturn stays in sidereal Pisces until Jun 2, 2027, with a brief return in late 2027. If your birth year is near those windows, enter your birth details and compare natal and transiting Saturn.
Why is Saturn return so difficult?
Tradition, in both systems, reads Saturn as the planet of consequence and structure, so its return tends to coincide with commitments coming due: work, relationships, where you live. Jyotish frames it as a demand for effort and honesty rather than as misfortune, and reads its weight through your Moon, your running period and Jupiter's transit, not Saturn alone.
How do I find out what my Saturn return is?
Find your natal Saturn's sidereal sign and degree in your Vedic birth chart, then watch for transiting Saturn to reach it; the transit calculator on this site shows Saturn's current position and the dates it enters each sign. The Sade Sati calculator shows the related Moon-based transit with its phases and dates.
Is Sade Sati the same as a Saturn return?
No. A Saturn return is measured from your natal Saturn; Sade Sati from your natal Moon. Both recur every 29.5 years, but they overlap only when natal Saturn sits within one sign of your Moon. Sade Sati lasts about 7½ years; a return lasts months.
Does Vedic astrology use the Saturn return at all?
The classical texts do not name it, and most Vedic practitioners time Saturn through Sade Sati, the 4th- and 8th-sign transits, and the dasha periods. The conjunction still happens on the same date in both zodiacs, so a Vedic reading can take it into account; it just is not the primary lens.
